New York New York [Feb. 20th, 2006|04:15 pm]
Went to NYC with Anna for the weekend, to see off Lucy and Eduardo who are moving to Chile today.

The Chinatown bus is hit or miss. It's only $15, so you can't beat the price. The ride down was 5 1/2 hours, and there were two very loud girls behind us who would not be quiet at all. Horrible. Coming back was 4 hours, and it was quiet and OK.

I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, which I don't think I've ever done before.

We tried to get rush lottery tickets to Avenue Q. Basically, an hour and a half before the show, they have a lottery, where they lottery off 12 front-row seats for $21.50 each. We didn't win, but it didn't seem like a totally hopeless approach to getting tickets --- there seemed to be about 50 people there for about 12 tickets. I'd try it again.

We went to the New York Public Library and saw a Gutenberg Bible. I was really impressed with how clear and crisp the ink looks after 550 years. Just gorgeous. Then we walked all the way south to Chinatown and saw much Manhattan.

I like going to NYC occasionally, but I am glad I live here.

Ancient Redskins Information [Feb. 20th, 2006|07:34 pm]
In 1937, George Preston Marshall moved the Boston Braves football team to Washington DC, and renamed them the Washington Redskins. Marshall, the owner, was a big fan of showmanship --- his Indian-themed teams wore Indian war paint and (in publicity photos) Native American headdresses. The Redskins fans were encouraged to sing "Hail to the Redskins", with lyrics by Marshall's wife:

Hail to the Redskin, hail vic-to-ry,
Braves on the warpath, fight for old D.C.
Scalp 'em, swamp 'em. We will take 'em big score.
Read 'em, weep 'em. Touchdown we want heap more.

Fight on. Fight on til you have won.
Sons of Wash-ing-ton (Rah! Rah! Rah!)
Hail to the Redskins, hail vic-to-ry.
Braves on the warpath. Fight for old DC.

Paraphrased from "Pigskin: The Early Years of Pro Football", by Robert Peterson. As far as I can tell, the Bears, Giants and Redskins are the oldest surviving NFL franchises.
