My Big 5 Score
Lately I've been somewhat interested in the "Big 5 Personality Traits" model, so I took a free online test.

I'm a O96-C52-E93-A57-N14 Big Five!!

For those of you not in the know: that's Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. It's only a five-minute test where you rate statements from strongly agree to strongly disagree can tell us much about ourselves, but these results seem pretty correct to me.

So I feel like everyone would "want" to score highly on O and E and low on N (please correct me if you wouldn't want to). I think my C score is fair --- I'm right in the middle there --- but I'd prefer that score to be a lot higher ("High scorers tend to be reliable, well-organized, self-disciplined, careful; Low scorers tend to be disorganized, undependable, negligent.") C is definitely something I struggle with a lot in my life.

On the other hand, my A is right in the middle, but I'm pretty happy with it there. I enjoy being a little prickly on the outside and sweet on the side.

I don't think I want a high Extraversion score. I also doubt I'd get one, so that works out. :-)

Oh, of course, silly me. I have gigantic blind spots!

Why do you feel everyone would like to score high on E? I have at least one old post about this somewhere... I've tested halfway between E and I on the meyers-briggs for a while now. In reality, I have phases, and when I am more extroverted I sometimes feel lonely when alone... ugh, I hear that's a normal tendency but I HATE THAT.

When I am more introverted, I'm okay either with people or when I'm alone. :) This seems desirable to me.

Yeah, clearly that was an error. One of my blind spots.

I do sometimes feel lonely when I'm alone. I can handle it because I'm not alone that much and sometimes being alone is fine. But I am company-seeking.

That's great if it works for you!

I took the test and it happened to me again: halfway between E and I. This is probably okay... I'd like to be a bit more introverted if it were just about me, for the reasons above, but being able to extrovert (as a verb) is too useful on the job.

I am also very C, but you would have guessed that. And, I'm with you on agreeableness and like it for about the same reasons. I don't want to be a pushover, any more than I want to be an extreme jerk.

Heh. I pretty much bottomed out in every category (O12-C10-E9-A38-N18). It's interesting because this is self-perception so it may not line up with what others think of me.

  • Low E score doesn't surprise me, as I consider myself an introvert even when others tell me I'm not.
  • I've calmed down so a low N score works.
  • I don't think of myself as being creative or innovative, so a low O score makes sense.
  • I may have graded myself too harshly on the C questions, as I'm not wholly disorganized but I'm more of an improviser than a planner.
  • The A questions were a bit too vague - my tendency is to be agreeable with those that have earned my respect, and ignore or be rude to those who haven't, and the questions don't capture that behavior.

I'll have to think more about what my test responses indicate about what's going on in my brain.

hm, I'm O65-C41-E12-A96-N27. I found the labels and descriptors for the five traits to be a bit on judgmental side (in a switch from the norm for quizzes like this, I guess). It definitely felt like I was _supposed_ to "want" high or low scores. Is undependable really the the other end of self-disciplined? Where is spontaneous on the spectrum?

If people want to doublecheck their scores and have more free time than they ought to, they could check out the IPIP-NEO (also here) or some intermediate-length versions here or here.

Oh, and apparently I have a negative score for A. At least I think that's what
./Tst.xet:5:No counter '' defined. \exclude {Utilities/InputFiles  }
./Tst.xet:e:No counter '' defined. \preclude{Utilities/OutputFiles }
./Tst.xet:9:No counter '' defined. \occlude {Utilities/ShotputFiles}

Who the heck codes their integers as English strings? (Okay, it's probably an output routine, but I love the idea of having to write a math library with a language parser.)

Sadly, I faked the whole thing, but I have to agree that it would be truly wacky. Who could be so wacky? Oh, look.

Nice. I took the IPIP-NEO. The results were roughly similar to the short test.
